Why not make the pathways on your veg patch productive too. Grow thymes and chamomile between some stepping stones
The carpet formingThymus serphyllum is best as it forms a tight mat that is smothered in pink flowers. A white flowered thyme called ‘Snowdrift’ is also good and produces its flowers in late spring to early summer.Lightly trim the plants after flowering to keep the small plants producing plenty of stems and encouraging them to spread outwards. Chamomile ‘Treneague’ is also perfect for adding between stepping stones. It is a mat forming chamomile renowned for being used for chamomile lawns. It needs to be propagated from runners or division of mature plants and not from seed so buy in young plants.
