Steps to success

An old step ladder can make a high rise edible feature for your garden

Old wooden step ladders make great supports for plants and can look really special all planted up. They are particulary good for small gardens giving space to go upwards rather than outwards. Wooden step ladders can usually be found on ebay or at local car boot sales or secondhand furniture shops. If they are very tatty you could upcycle them with some colourful wood paint.
The ladder featured has a lovely mix of small flowered pansies and herbs planted in old tin cans. You could use small terracotta pots instead but if using tin cans make some holes in the bottom. Also make sure you use a special can opener that does not leave a sharp edge. The cans are planted up with alpine strawberries, chives, golden origanum and many other herbs such as thyme and mint.
