Children swap pebbles for veggies at Squires Garden Centre

children swap pebbles for veggies

Children across the South East have been taking part in Squire’s Garden Centres ‘Paint A Pebble’ activity. They were invited to collect a free pebble from Squire’s, paint it to look like a vegetable, then bring their masterpiece back into the garden centre and swap it for a free pack of vegetable seeds to grow at home.

Hundreds of children took part, and many schools did too, including those in:

  • Farnham – Folly Hill Infant School & Badshot Lea Infant School
  • Milford – Milford Infant School
  • Crawley – Southgate Primary School & Our Lady Queen of Heaven Primary School
  • Wokingham – Floreat Montague Park Primary School

Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres said; “It was lovely to see the children’s beautiful creations which have been proudly displayed at each of our sixteen garden centres. We had everything from carrots to potatoes, and peas to broccoli. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the children who took part, and I hope that they enjoy planting their pack of seeds at home. As well as inspiring them to grow their own, hopefully it might encourage some of them to love eating their greens!”

It’s not too late to plant vegetables at home. Why not try:

  • Onions and Garlic (plant outdoors)
  • Winter Lettuce & Spring Onions (in a cold frame or under cloches)
  • Chilli Peppers, Basil, Dill, Chives & Parsley (in the greenhouse or indoors)
  • Certain varieties of Broad Beans, Peas & Perpetual Spinach (sow outdoors)
