Support your melons

Melons are great fun to grow and do best in a greenhouse. Their thin trailing stems can be trained up strings and wires attached to the roof of the greenhouse. This means you can pack more plants into a tighter space. The disadvantage is the fruit develops without any means of support. To help with this as soon as the fruits are starting to get beyond tennis ball size then carefully take an oblong piece of crop protection fleece and tie strings to the ends. Place under the fruit to cup it gently and then suspend the strings from the roof of the greenhouse. Just have the strings tight enough to take the weight of the fruit allowing the natural hang of the fruit from its stalk.
