Prepare a bean trench

Beans, especially runners and French beans, like a good rich soil that retains moisture well and you can prepare an area of ground during the winter which will provide these right conditions for the following season. It is also a great way to get rid of kitchen scraps. Firstly, dig a trench where you plan to grow your beans. It can be roughly 45cm deep or slightly more if you wish. Then collect your kitchen vegetable scraps in a bucket and when full simply tip into the trench. You can cover immediately with a light covering of soil to prevent smells and interest from any wildlife. Keep adding to the trench and finally cover with more soil and then leave. In late May or June simply plant your beans where you created the trench.
